Radical Careering

If you haven’t had a chance to read Radical Careering by Sally Hogshead I suggest you pick up a copy.  She wants to know — do you have a career worth loving? In her book, Sally points out that “for the careerist, life and work feed off of each other.  Work is personal.  Work touches all aspects of our lives.  When you’re excited about work, it’s easier to be excited about all else in your life.  And when you’re operating as your best self, work is only one of the many areas in which you’ll be your best.”

Sally’s philosophy mirrors mine in that in order to truly dig what you do’ you’ve got to develop a passion for your work.  Professionals in the workforce have more power now than they have ever had.  They have tremendous control over their own careers, and how their work can positively impact all the other parts of their life.

As Sally states “being in a crap job isn’t your fault.  Staying in a crap job is.”

If you’ve spent anytime in other less fortunate countries you quickly realize how good we have it. If you have the passion and drive to succeed then you probably will. It may not be where you thought you would end up but odds are that you’ll be successful. In other countries that simply isn’t always true. So it a great reminder to myself to quit making excuses, don’t fear failure and as the Nike slogan says… just do it.
