Ok, we all need money – that’s true. But, when money becomes the only focus around your job search, you’re in trouble. No matter how much money you bring home on a monthly basis, the paycheck will never really be enough. Let’s face the fact…we always want more.
But, your job has got to be more fulfilling than just bringing home the money. If not, you’re in for an unhappy ride. Sooner or later you’ll begin to think…why am I doing this anyway? So, how do you get past the ‘money’ chatter and into the real deal of loving what you do so that at the end of your day you are satisfied with the way you’ve spent your time?
One of the ways to begin this journey is to take a fresh look at your true purpose. As Joel Garfinkle says in his book, Love Your Work, you’ve got to ‘build on what you do enjoy, eliminate what you do not, and open your mind to the possibilities of loving your work’.
Sit back for a bit and take a good look at what your skills and abilities really are and how you are applying those aspects of yourself on your job. Are you using the best parts of you? Do you know what those parts even are? Don’t fall into letting the humdrum of daily routine drown out or cover up your true gifts. If you’ve gotten to bogged down the best thing to do to uncover your skills, abilities and interests is to take a good personality/career assessment and begin to rediscover who you are and what you really love doing.
Some people are afraid to do this because they think that it will automatically mean that they will need to make a job change, but in fact this is not true. Although some of you may desire a change others may find new ways to apply your top abilities in the current job you have.
