Tucked away in my email was a newsletter from Nightingale Conant, a website loaded with personal improvement information (ok, yes…I’m an improvement junkie). Anyway, there is a quote by Jim Rohn that says: “You cannot change your destination overnight, but you can change your direction overnight.â€
What rings true to me in his quote is that so often when we want to make a change (whether it is a career or personal change) we just want it now’. We want to close our eyes, tap our heels together three times and presto — we’ve arrived at our new destination. Of course, we all know that this can’t truly happen and that is when frustration can overtake us.
The quote above is right — you can make a change in your direction’ overnight and that is where our own power comes back into play. That is where we can find our strength to pursue a new destination.
There is a page on Nightingale that gives you a Mission Statement builder — it’s free and fun to do. If it’s been a while since you’ve created a mission statement, or if you’ve never done one this can be an eye opening (brain awakening) few minutes of your time. Give it a try and see if you can give flight to a new destination by changing your direction.
After all, in order to find a career that is a good match and leads to a fulfilling way to spend your time, you’ve got to spend time digging in to who you are, what you want and what works best for you. Your mission statement can be a good starting point.
P.S. If you have other sites you know of that have good information about goal setting and mission building let me know. Do share…
