A Christmas message against selfishness

I’m no fan of the Catholic Church, I’ll admit. And I’m less than enamored with its new pope. But I will give credit to Pope Benedict XVI for the Christmas message he gave this year.

According to a story in the International Herald Tribune, the Pope warned against selfishness in these troubled economic times.

It’s a good message for us all to keep in mind. There are more people who need help, and not just on Christmas day. Take the time out of your day — even if you yourself are struggling to make your mortgage payments or hold onto you job — to help someone less fortunate than you.

One of the volunteer jobs I do is to help new immigrants to the country learn how to read and speak English. There are days when I don’t want to teach the English-As-A-Second-Language class, but I do it anyway. And you know what? I feel great when I’m doing it and after I’m doing it. It is true: Helping others gives you a great feeling. It’s what makes us compassionate beings.

So this time, at least, listen to the Pope. Do a few good deeds in 2009.
