We all know the job market is a tough one these days. But sometimes, it’s hard to understand just how tough it is until you either experience the pain of job hunting or, in this case, read about it.

I found an interesting blog the other day that chronicles the challenge that a recent college grad is having in landing a job in the public-relations industry.  The blog, PublicRelations101, shows just how tough it is out there for new college grads. The blog’s author, instead of working in the PR business, is now holding down a job at a Subway restaurant. Not surpisingly to anyone who’s worked in fast food (let me tell you about my former glory days at a Dairy Queen in Chicago), the author absolutely hates her sandwich-slinging career.

I know that PR pros are hurting during this recession. I write for several newspapers and trade magazines across the country. There was a time when I worked closely with a dozen or more PR professionals, all of whom pitched me story ideas or helped me track down sources. Most of these PR professionals were outstanding at their jobs.

Today, though, I hear regularly from four or five PR agents. The rest are out of the industry. PR is one of the first departments that companies gut during hard economic times. It’s not the best field to be job hunting in right now.
