It’s been a terrible year on the career front, and few expect 2009 to be any better. But that doesn’t mean you can’t take steps to improve your career prospects in the coming year.
Author Richard A. Smith, writing for the Huffington Post, has created an extremely comprehensive list of 50 things you can do to help move your career forward in 2009. I won’t summarize all of his ideas here, but some stood out.
For instance, Smith recommends that you get on Facebook if you want to successfully negotiate and interact with like-minded business pros. This is interesting because Facebook wasn’t even on the radar until two years ago or so. Smith also recommends that you write what he calls a career obituary: Imagine what you’d write if your career turned out exactly as you have always hoped it would.
Smith recommends, too, that you start a blog. Again, here is a career tip that would have meant nothing to most people just two or three years ago.
Some of Smith’s other tips seem like common sense, but are surprisingly ignored by many: He advises people to exercise regularly and to dress well. One makes you feel better, the second makes you look like you expect success.
The advice Smith passes out really is great. Head over there now and read through the whole list. You might be surprised at what you learn.
