Hoping for a better 2009

I imagine I won’t be alone in wishing a “good riddance” to 2008 once the clock hits midnight this evening.

On the personal front, my family and I had several highlights this year. The top one is the addition of our second son to our family, a little boy whom we adopted and has kept everyone on their toes for the eight months we’ve been blessed to have him.

Career wise it’s been an erratic year. I picked up several new online writing opportunities. Problem is, these opportunities don’t pay quite as well as I would like. In fact, several of the new writing opportunities I grabbed this year don’t pay as much as I’d like, but nothing’s perfect, right?

This year also saw the publication of my first comic book, GEARZ, put out by independent publisher Bluewater Comics. I’ve been trying to break into comic-book writing this year, and though it’s been too slow for my taste, at least I did make actual progress this year. I also landed three comic short stories in anthologies due to be printed in 2009, and wrote two additional short series for Bluewater that will be published in 2009, too.

But on the whole, I’ll remember the working portion of 2008 as the year I wrote more stories than ever, but didn’t quite make as much money as I’ve averaged for the five years prior. I think a lot of independent contractors can say the same thing: We all worked hard this year. Our bank accounts may not reflect that.

The experts out there seem to agree that 2009 will be an even tougher year for the economy than was 2008. But today is New Year’s Eve, the end of the holiday season. Today is a day for hope. So let’s hope that the coming 12 months are actually better ones.

So, 2008, here’s your hat, where’s your hurry? And don’t let the door hit you in the behind on the way out.
