We tend to get a bit isolated here in the United States. We often don’t think of the rest of the world, which is often going through the same problems we are experiencing.
It’s little surprise that as unemployment soars to new heights, more people are logging onto online job sites.
You don’t want to be unemployed today in any state. But if you live in South Carolina, you just might be a bit more ticked off than if you live in, say, Illinois or Indiana.
In my job as a trade-magazine editor, I work with many public-relations professionals. Some are quite good at what they do. Others call and e-mail me so often that I want to shoot myself whenever I see their names on my caller ID or in my inbox.
Layoffs are always tough. Last week, the publishing company where I work fired nine employees from our rather small department. Many of the employees had worked at our company for more than a decade. Some where the type that always made sure their co-workers received cards on their birthdays or brought in muffins on Friday [...]
Because I work in publishing — and because many of the magazines I write for cover the housing industry — I tend to think that my industry is suffering more than any other during this recession.
The publishing where I work on a full-time/part-time basis laid off nine employees last week. That may not seem like a lot when compared to the massive layoffs taking place across the country. But in our fairly small office, it’s made a significant dent in the size of our workforce.
I’ve long preached — or nagged — that people should craft busy, active lives outside the workforce. Too many people tie their entire self worth to their job. They care about their careers and little else.
Last year, I brought my two sons to the publishing office where I work a full-time/part-time job. It was the first time either of them had been there, and upon seeing my rather spartan desk, my older son — he was 9 at the time — asked me why I didn’t have any pictures of [...]
I just got off a conference call this morning with the powers-that-be at the publishing company where I work on a full-time/part-time basis. Like all publishers, this company, which covers real estate news, is struggling. So this morning, the company had its first round of firings. |
